10 Movies That Really Stay With You
2. Requiem For A Dream
That ending. For anyone who has seen this film that should be more than enough to know why it's made this list. A gut-wrenchingly well acted drama based off the Hubert Selby Jr. novel of the same name; Requiem For A Dream is a film that really saves its message for its final act.
The whole movie builds and builds its tension and its characters to a point of just utter and complete devastation and despair, and there are few films that do it as well as Darren Aronofky's brilliant adaptation. By the end of the film you're left feeling empty and drained; you're right there with them, suffering and scrounging with these poor souls we've been routing for through all their drug addled misadventures. There is a rule among writers that you should never be kind to your characters and certainly it's a rule that the writer lives by because he is brutal with them.
You care about these people, with all their flaws and foibles, and we couldn't be dragged away from them at a lower point in their lives. If you feel nothing at the end of this film I truly worry for you.
