10 Movies That Ruin The Credibility Of The IMDb Top 250

7. The Message (1976)

Chances are that most people haven't even heard of The Message, a bloated historical "epic" from 1976, which is probably enough of a reason to discredit the IMDb Top 250 alone. For the uninitiated, the film concerns the birth of Islam and the life of the prophet Muhammad, with Anthony Quinn and Irene Papas in starring roles.

Regardless of its plot, themes, and intentions (to basically explain the teachings of Islam to a Western audience), The Message just isn't very good; at over three hours, it strives for Lawrence of Arabia levels of epic and comes up short.

So what has happened here? What is The Message doing on the list, despite having a relatively low score of just 69% on Rotten Tomatoes? Your guess is as good as anybody's, though one could speculate that it has been rated highly for what it's about and not the execution itself.

Religious ties aside, it is difficult to deny that the film itself is conflicted and bland, regardless of it having been pushed up the list based on subject matter alone.
