10 Movies That Ruin The Credibility Of The IMDb Top 250

6. The Help (2011)

Few could argue that the 2011 adaptation of The Help, which stars Emma Stone and Viola Davis, is a bad movie. Indeed, it's easy to watch, accessible for audiences of all ages, and it tackles a number of important issues surrounding race.

But the users of the IMDB do themselves a huge disservice when a movie like the The Help winds up with a place on the Top 250 list in favour of other, better race-related films such as Do the Right Thing, In the Heat of the Night, and even Boys n the Hood. These are certified masterpieces - intelligent, important, and truly alive.

"It's just that more people have seen The Help," you're probably thinking right now. True: but wouldn't a version of the Top 250 that encouraged more left-field and undervalued films be of more use to cinema fans looking for their next fix?

There's nothing wrong with The Help, fundamentally; better to tackle an issue than to not tackle it at all, right? But the film is sanitised, mawkish, and packed with stereotypes. It isn't all that progressive, even if it tries to make audiences feel that way.
