10 Movies That Show You Shouldn’t Trust Strangers

6. Rosemary’s Baby (1968)

Single White Female
Paramount Pictures

Young married couple Rosemary and Guy rent an apartment in Manhattan and they make friends with the kind, elderly neighbours Roman and Minnie. The pair proceed to develop very different relationships with the neighbours, with Guy using them to further his acting career and Rosemary trusting them to help look after her during her pregnancy.

It is never clear if Guy knows exactly what he has exchanged for his suddenly successful showbiz career, but he is definitely aware that someone has assaulted Rosemary as he quickly and jokingly takes the blame to assuage her paranoid anxiety about a demon raping her in her sleep. He appears to be so concerned about creating a better life for them that he is willing to exchange what should be the most precious thing in the world to him to achieve this. Roman and Minnie take full advantage of this by offering him everything he has ever wanted.

Roman and Minnie proceed to gaslight Rosemary in helping to isolate her by separating her from her friends, and persuade her to conform to the way they tell her to behave. By the time she finally meets her baby and realises what it is, she has been so horrendously manipulated that she just accepts that she is now part of the cult and will raise her baby in the way they want her to.
