10 Movies That Show You Shouldn’t Trust Strangers

5. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)

Single White Female
Bryanston Pictures

Teenagers Sally, her brother Franklin, and three of their friends, travel to Texas to check on their grandfather’s grave and visit the family homestead. They spot a man walking on the road and feel sorry for him as it is such a hot day, so stop and offer the hitchhiker a lift. It is highly likely that they felt safer in their numbers with picking up a stranger, but this is soon shown to be a mistake.

Nubbins (as he is referred to in the sequel) tells them that he has come from the slaughterhouse and shows them some disturbing photos. He tries to guide them towards his family home, inviting them to dinner, but his behaviour begins to turn much more erratic when they refuse. Grabbing Franklin's knife, he cuts his own hand, then pulls out a razor. He takes a photo of Franklin and then burns it in the van and cuts Franklin when he refuses to buy it.

By this point, the travellers have realised their mistake and kick the hitchhiker out, but by then it is too late as he marks the van with a bloody handprint for his family to see in order for them to target later. Hitchhiking just never ends well in the movies, no matter which end of the situation the characters are in!
