10 Movies That Took Insane Steps To Prevent Spoilers
6. The Self-Destructing App - Pacific Rim
Many films naturally take inspirations from a lot of different places in the hope that when they come together in the final product, it feels unique. Pacific Rim did this successfully by turning to the realm of mecha anime as a major influence, creating a refreshingly entertaining popcorn blockbuster with a tone so fun, it easily covers up the somewhat thin characterisations it contains.
However, it appears like its security team protecting its script were influenced by another film franchise entirely. More akin to the Mission Impossible series, production members had to get a special iPad app where they are able to view it for a limited amount of hours. After that time has elapsed, the digital file will self-destruct. While not physically exploding into a million pieces (I guess they needed to re-use the iPad) the move certainly has fingerprints of the IMF team all over it, which is ironic given the subject matter.
The fact that Pacific Rim resorted to these measures is inherently a bit weird anyway. While other films on this list are protecting significant plot-driven revelations, its story was fairly standard with its tone and visuals being at the forefront instead. So yeah, strange all round this.
