10 Movies That Totally Ripped Off Die Hard
3. Hostage (2005)
Much like 16 Blocks, Hostage is a criminally under-appreciated Willis vehicle that came out when he could still consistently give a damn about the movies he starred in.
A critical and commercial bomb on release, the movie casts Willis as a former hostage negotiator and basically gives the audience two Die Hard movie scenarios for the price of one.
Willis' Jeff Talley is called to a house where a crime syndicate accountant is being held hostage with his family, and in order to stop incriminating information about the syndicate being discovered, Talley is ordered to cool the situation down until the syndicate can send a hit squad to the house. If he doesn't do it? Talley's own kidnapped family will be executed.
It's a bit of a convoluted set-up, sure, but this unexpectedly stylish, brutally violent thriller sees Willis channelling the exasperated grit that made the first three Die Hards so damn entertaining.
It's more cartoonish than any of the Die Hard movies, in fairness, but with a few tweaks it'd fit effortlessly into the John McClane canon. Again, like 16 Blocks, it clearly owes a debt to the lineage of these movies, and Willis is once again brilliant as the put-upon man on a mission.
