10 Movies That Totally Surprised You When They Ended

4. Casino Royale

Pulp Fiction Ending

Add Casino Royale to the pile of blockbusters that seem to be categorically wrapping up, only to carry on for an extended additional climax.

Literally a whole half-hour before the end of the movie, primary villain Le Chiffre (Mads Mikkelsen) is killed, after which Bond (Daniel Craig) retires from MI6 and jets off to Venice with Vesper Lynd (Eva Green).

That's quite a typical, respectable ending for a Bond movie, right? Except, rather than roll the triumphant credits, director Martin Campbell has an additional set-piece in the bank, as Bond believes Vesper has betrayed him, only for her to be kidnapped and, eventually, drown.

At this point 007 returns to service and tracks down the man behind it all, Mr. White (Jesper Christensen), before shooting him in the leg and finally dropping the iconic quip, "Bond, James Bond."

Honestly, most of that final stretch could've easily served as the pre-title sequence for Quantum of Solace instead, giving it the propulsive opening it lacked in actuality, and ensuring Casino Royale's finale didn't feel a little over-egged.

It's still a strong ending for sure, but absolutely not where anyone expected things to go once Le Chiffre got shot in the head 20 minutes prior.
