10 Movies That Tricked You Into Thinking They Were Over

5. The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997)

The Lost World Jurassic Park 2The "False" Ending... Having relived the terror he felt the first time he ended up escaping dinosaur-based death in the original Jurassic Park all over again, Dr. Ian Malcolm manages to escape the clutches of a group of velociraptors, rescue his daughter, and board a helicopter off of the second island. Phew, everything worked out okay. This moment, of course, is reminiscent of the ending of the first Jurassic Park, when our heroes board a helicopter and the movie ends. It's a natural point of conclusion. But Wait... At 100 minutes, that could've been a good point to end the movie and nobody would have complained it was too short, but Spielberg has a surprise for us: using the helicopter imagery as a way to trick you, he deploys a surprise third act, which involves a T-Rex getting free and stalking the mainland for a further half hour. It's arguably the most exciting part of the movie, and something we'd all been waiting to see, so it paid off, I guess. A shame that the rest of the movie was so middling, then.
