2. Alien 3 Used To Feature A Wooden Planet Full Of Monks
Alien 3 had a legendarily troubled shoot, with first time director David Fincher nearly breaking down over the pressure he was put under. But it was a mess long before he arrived. A ton of scripts were written, some not even featuring Ripley as Sigourney Weaver was reluctant to return. There was a space prison, a space farm and a teaser trailer even hinted it would be set on earth. The producers wanted to find something unique, and felt they found it in director Vincent Wards idea. His Alien 3 was set on a wooden planet, where an order of monks who have rejected technology and modern society live. Ripleys escape pod crash lands, and Hicks and Newt die on impact. Also onboard is an Alien, who wastes no time slaying himself some tasty monks. They blame Ripley for this, believing she brought the devil with her. She teams up with a nice monk to survive. Pre-production got underway and sets were built, before internal conflicts made things unravel fast. The producers thought it was too expensive to do the wooden planet and wanted something cheaper, and they demanded other story changes too. These arguments led to Ward leaving and Fincher coming on. A fast rewrite changed the monks to prisoners and the wood planet became a prison. The final film had a mixed reception, and Fincher himself has disowned it.
