4. Prometheus Used To Be A Straight Forward Alien Prequel
Prometheus saw Ridley Scott return to the sci-fi genre after a long gap and also kinda, sorta return to the Alien series. It starred out as a direct prequel to Alien, and went into development under the title Alien: Engineers. In the script the characters land on planet LV-426 where they uncover the history of the Engineers and face new versions of the Alien, including a boneless albino creature. It also had a twist on the famous chestbuster scene, where the Alien bursts out of an impregnated character during sex. But as development rode on it started to break away from that script. Scott was also tired of the Alien, feeling the design had been done to death. He had the script rewritten by Damon Lindelof (Lost, Star Trek) who retained the basic story but removed the Aliens and reworked characters, motivations and settings. The resulting film met a mixed reaction. The main complaints were the patchy story, dumb or unlikable characters and the tone shifting between philosophical musing and b-movie silliness.
