7. Toy Story 3

Why oh why does it seem so often that animators have some weird vendetta against people who only want to watch amusing characters do silly things and maybe learn something about friendship? 'Cause...holy crap, you guys, there are a lot of animated films that will ruin children and adults alike. But the coup de grâce to the heart comes in the third act of Pixar's Toy Story 3. This is a two-step process that was absolutely designed to make you dribble tears like a toddler with an ear infection. First, there's that excruciating scene in the incinerator. Look, this is still a kids' movie and we, as a fully-grown audience, should know better than to think they'd actually kill a bunch of innocent toys with fire. But... isn't it possible they'd kill one just to uppercut your emotions? Which one would it be? Would they kill Buzz or Woody? There's a precedent for this kind of thing in Disney movies, so the possibility that one of them steps up and heart-wrenchingly sacrifices himself for his friends is very real. But even when they escape that morose, fire-blazing scene of impending destruction, we still have to contend with that final goodbye from a grown-up Andy. For those of us who literally grew into adulthood watching the Toy Story series, it was like saying goodbye to our own childhoods.
