4. Would You Rather?

"Would You Rather?" is an obscure, highly underrated gem of a horror flick starring Brittany Snow that hit the festival circuit in 2012. Directed by David Guy Levy, it's based on the party game of the same name where contestants are presented with two unappealing options and have to choose which one they would rather partake in. The story centers around Snow's Iris, who is struggling to support herself and her brother who is suffering from leukemia, unable to afford the costs of his care. Her doctor offers her a solution and introduces her to a wealthy man who invites her to participate in a game at his house, where, if she wins, he will pay for all of her brother Raleigh's treatment. All the contestants in the game are down on their luck and in desperate need of money, and it soon becomes apparent that this game is far more sinister than what they expected. There are no gory details here, but suffice it to say there's some brutal stuff involved. When Iris is one of the final two competitors, she makes a devastating decision that wins her the game and the treatment for her brother, only to return home to find him dead by his own hand. It's a brilliant jolt of an ending that added so much gravity to everything she was put through in the game, and had Raleigh lived to receive his miracle treatments that would have been rendered null and void.
