3. Star Trek Destroys Lots The Fans Loved (And They Dont Care)
Whats this? A high profile example that actually worked? Am I getting to write about something totally positively? Not technically destroying the continuity, with his Star Trek reboot J.J. Abrams created a cool, Star Wars-y alternate timeline that allowed for a general audience friendly reboot. The diminishing returns of the franchise through the eighties and nineties came from an inability to appeal to both Trekkies who could bemoan quality and general audiences who brought the money, so having a reverential reboot (although Into Darkness may have gone a little too far into referencing) was a great move. Of course, with Nimoy Spock having travelled back in time to give Quinto Spock important information at regular intervals, its not like the new direction is completely ignoring the series heritage. Except it sort of is. While the Original Series gets a good show in the new movies, The Next Generation, a show that made Trek (slightly) cooler and turned Patrick Stewart into a nerd God, has no place in this alternate world. Spock traveled back in time before the time of the series, meaning theres no knowledge of it in this new direction. But theres the real genius of this film. Abrams isn't saying it didn't happen, just that it didn't happen in
this timeline. Everyone happy.
