2. Dawn of the Dead
Though we typically think of the end of the world in terms of a nuclear holocaust or an alien invasion, we can't ignore the possibility that it could come in the form of a zombie apocalypse, just like in George A. Romero's horror classic Dawn of the Dead. The infection present in these films has always been attributed to a fallen, irradiated satellite, suggesting that something beyond our understanding could, in our pursuit for technological advancement, be our undoing. The protagonists famously make base in a gigantic shopping mall to fend off the zombies, making the film one of the most socially conscious, provocative and intelligent horror films ever made. That it's also got awesome, gory head-shots and scenes of people having their guts ripped out, then, is a delightful bonus.
What it tells us: if you're gonna die, you may as well stop at the mall, put on some Ray Bans, some Converse sneakers, and a nice Tom Ford suit so you can die in style.
