10 Movies Way Freakier Than You Thought

5. The "Heroes" Kill Tons Of Innocent People - The Matrix

The Matrix is unquestionably one of the most badass action movies of all time, but it's also worth taking a step back to consider the epic human cost of the heroes' attempt to save the human race from the constraints of The Matrix.

This is no better evidenced than in the film's iconic lobby shootout, where Neo (Keanu Reeves) and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) slaughter a fleet of security guards and soldiers, all of whom are actual people plugged into The Matrix.

Given that dying in The Matrix also kills you in real life, there's no getting around the body count Neo and co. rack up.

Though Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) compellingly argues earlier in the movie that anyone propping up The Matrix, unknowingly or not, is an enemy, that's still the sort of hardline, black-and-white mindset most often associated with fundamentalist terrorists.

Yes, the "heroes" are working towards the wider goal of emancipating humanity, and yes, these guards and soldiers would've been assimilated by the Agents if left alive anyway, but the stylish callousness with which they're executed basically suggests they're absolutely worthless.

You can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs, but do you really need to spit on the eggs while you're doing it?
