10 Movies Where The Hero Originally Died At The End

7. John Rambo - First Blood

Terminator Salvation Original Ending
Orion Pictures

First Blood was adapted from an acclaimed novel, where the character of John Rambo was much more bloodthirsty. In the book, he has no trouble killing his pursuers, but for the movie they made him more sympathetic, and the only death he causes is accidental.

Like the book the movie was supposed to end with Rambo’s death at the hands of Colonel Trautman. They even filmed this scene, which featured Rambo forcing the gun into the Colonel’s hand and making him pull the trigger. Stallone felt this ending was far too bleak, and opted for the most hopeful version where he turns himself over to the police.

Stallone would later reuse footage from this ending for 2008’s Rambo, where the character has a violent nightmare and relives events from the previous three movies, which ends with his symbolic “death.”

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
