10 Movies Where The Hero Turns Evil In The Sequel
6. Thorin Oakenshield - The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies
After the success of The Lord of the Rings, Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy fell some way short in most departments. Pretty much all departments really, other than the number of dragons. One of the biggest downgrades was going from a hero like Aragorn to Thorin Oakenshield.
The Dwarf Prince had the motivation to tell a compelling story, but the main problem was that he just wasn't that likeable. He treated Bilbo like rubbish throughout the majority of the first movie, he was rigid and stubborn, and in The Battle of the Five Armies he descended into a full-on villain.
Once Thorin and company took Erebor back from Smaug, and after the people of Lake Town paid the price for the dragon's disturbance, the new King under the Mountain grew greedy. He coveted the Arkenstone, and with that came a paranoia, and something of an sickness. He became just as protective of his gold as the dragon before him was.
Thorin had struck a bargain with Bard, and he owed the people of Lake Town fair recompense. However, instead of paying what was rightfully owed, Thorin locked himself in his mountain and gave himself one more enemy on the battlefield in the lead up to his ultimate death.
