Polar opposite to the last entry, in which a son torments his own mother, The Babadook features an eerie family portrait where traditional parental roles and idealistic expectations for the future are not concepts that should be trusted. Parents are supposed to take care of the children, right? Hopefully, someday they’ll return the favour and take care of your elderly wrinkly bones. And so life repeats itself, but that’s not what happens when you are exposed to the curse of the Babadook. Now let’s take a look.

Amelia is a depressed widow who raised son Samuel alone, following her husband’s death in a car accident. This traumatic event has been a cause of estrangement between mother and son that is only intensified when Sam begins exhibiting erratic behaviour in both home and school. He fashions strange weapons in order to fend off an unseen and dangerous figure that prowls in the shadows during the late hours of the night. Therefore, the boy is afflicted by an acute case of insomnia that has left ever-present dark circles under his eyes.

Then the book appears. Yes, that creepy book, the one that reads Mr. Babadook.

When mother and son acknowledge the Babadook’s existence, the sinister presence stalks them without rest until finally it takes over Amelia’s body. Then comes the moment of self-awareness, when the desperate widow finally admits her flaws as a mother and grants herself the opportunity to embrace her pain and grief, instead of burying her negative feelings deep inside as she usually did. Crisis averted, the hero boy lives! Still, some skeletons must always remain in the closet. Or in this case, monsters in the basement.
