The Sixty Minute War came and went in the blink of an eye, leaving behind nothing but countless deaths and immeasurable destruction. The whole world obliterated in a single hour, quite an accomplishment. Centuries went by and the survivors adapted, bringing about the rise of the mobile predator cities that hunt and assimilate smaller settlements.

The new world driven forward by giant roaring engines. That’s been the established way of life in this dystopian world for a long time, although there are rebels willing to fight for those who were born without influence and privilege.

Amongst these deadly cities on wheels, London is an impressive sight to behold. However, the predatory ways of old prove to be insufficient to sustain the ever-growing needs of the population. The solution for this energy crisis is left in the capable hands of Deputy Lord Mayor Thaddeus Valentine (played by a delightfully crazed Hugo Weaving), who secretly plans to reactivate one of the ancient quantum-energy weapons that destroyed the world in the first place. Not a great solution, Mr. Mayor.

In order to collect and secure the technologies necessary to revive the “quantum cannon”, Valentine has done pretty terrible things. In particular, he killed the mother of female protagonist Hester Shaw, a long-running trauma that sparks an obsession for revenge and an assassination attempt on Valentine during the first scenes of the movie.

Later on, Shaw faces the villain once more for a definitive showdown. The battle rages on and the villain seems to be doomed. Unexpectedly, Valentine asks his opponent to remember the times he used to visit her when Shaw was just a kid.

It’s in that moment when Hester remembers that her mom and Valentine used to be all chummy gummy when they were together, while reading books and giggling like high school sweethearts. It’s only then that Shaw figures out that the villain is her real father. Or maybe it was a last resort mind trick perfectly executed by a pathological manipulator? You tell me. Nah, he surely boinked Hester’s mom.
