10 Movies With INSANE Budgets (That Didn't Pay Off)

3. Justice League

The Lone Ranger
Warner Bros.

In 2017, DC and Warner Bros. Pictures released their tentpole superhero franchise film, which was meant to be a means of launching further films in the DCEU. The plan was to mimic the success of Marvel Studios' Avengers film franchise by finally bringing the Justice League to the silver screen.

The movie was hit or miss (depending on who you ask), but that hardly matters given the immense cost put into making Justice League a reality. The movie had a disturbingly high production budget of $300 million making it the fourth most expensive movie ever made.

While the box office take of $657 million sounds like a lot, it didn't manage to make what the studio needed. The break-even point was $750 million thanks to incredibly high marketing and production costs, which resulted in a loss of $60 million for the studio.

One of the biggest problems was a large number of reshoots needed to make the film work for the studio's vision. This meant Henry Cavill had to return with his infamous mustache that had to be removed in post, but more than that, numerous scenes without him had to be reshot. At the end of the day, the cost was too high, and DC ended up changing plans on the films that were planned to follow. Many were cancelled while others were completely retooled.
