9. Claudette's Cancer - The Room
One of the all-time most bizarre and infamous pointless subplots occurs in Tommy Wiseau's brilliantly awful The Room, frequently cited as "the Citizen Kane of bad movies". Early on in the film, protagonist Johnny's (Wiseau) fiancee Lisa is talking with her mother, Claudette, about planning Johnny's birthday party. After a short discussion, Claudette comes out with the confession that, "I got the results of the test back. I definitely have breast cancer." Lisa doesn't seem particularly alarmed by this, and the issue is never mentioned again throughout the film, leaving the audience on the limb. While this might be one of the few pieces of evidence that Wiseau actually
was making a surreal nonsensical masterpiece on purpose, it's more likely that a subsequent scene wound up on the cutting room floor, making this sudden health declaration seem totally pointless other than for teasing a good laugh.
