10 Movies With Random Subplots For Absolutely No Reason

8. Spock & Uhura's Romance - Star Trek (2009)

Star Trek The original Star Trek TV series didn't feature a romance between logic freak Spock or Uhura, yet J.J. Abrams decided to taunt the fanboys a little by introducing it in his largely excellent 2009 movie reboot. The romance makes itself most pronounced when Spock's home planet, Vulcan, is decimated by the crazed Nero, and Uhura expresses a relatively intimate degree of sympathy. Much is made of the kiss between the two in the film, but really, what bearing does this have on the plot? The answer is none at all; nothing of the central narrative would change without this inclusion, and it simply seems to be an effort on Abrams' part to make Spock seem a little more human, and because we can't possibly have a blockbuster movie without a romance in it, can we? The sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness, further proves its pointlessness, by reducing Zoe Saldana's Uhura to a nagging girlfriend stereotype and little else.
