10 Movies With Random Subplots For Absolutely No Reason

7. Sean Bean's Character - Silent Hill

Silent Hill Sean Bean's Christopher is an important component of the first Silent Hill movie for the opening scene and little else. Once it's established that their daughter, Sharon, needs to be taken to Silent Hill, he ceases to become useful other than as an outlet for the director to bounce dialogue and exposition off. Rose (Radha Mitchell) crashes her car on the way to Silent Hill, and spends the rest of the film trying to track her missing daughter down, while Christopher, who probably should have just gone to the sleepy town with her in the first place, shows up later to try and find them both. Christopher views the town as abandoned, a stark contrast from Rose's experience, filled with toxic ash and grotesque monsters, and that's about as far as his usefulness as a character goes. Otherwise, it's simply because the director doesn't want a movie continually focused on Rose without the ability to cut away.
