6. Uma Thurman/Ethan Hawke Romance - Gattaca

Gattaca Gattaca is a superb film from Andrew Niccols while he still gave two craps about his career, a thought-provoking meditation on the dangers of meddling with genetics, and a possible future it could lead to. Vincent (Ethan Hawke) wants to become an astronaut, though has to proceed through fraudulent means - buying a genetically superior man's identity - due to being discriminated against for his lowly genetic profile. In this stead, he ends up meeting Irene (Uma Thurman), a genetically superior being who is nevertheless similarly discriminated against because she has a slightly elevated risk of suffering heart failure. As a result, the two bond, but the romance between them is oddly cold, clinical and sterile. The icy nature of Thurman's character denies the actors - who, ironically, were married the next year - the ability to forge a heart-felt romance, and so it seems rather redundant when the meat of the story is so thoroughly fascinating in of itself.
