Any series that goes beyond a trilogy has to justify the longevity of the series with consistently developing characters, bigger and badder villains, rising stakes, and it has to make sure that it finishes strongly.

Bella is learning how to cope with being a vampire as well as mastering the special skills that come with it all while trying to protect her baby daughter, Renesmee from The Volturi. A bitter Irina convinced them that Renesmee is an 'immortal child' - something illegal in Volturi law - and so they intend to kill her along with the rest of the Cullens.

Rather than allow the Cullens to prove that Renesmee is not an immortal child, they intend to provoke a final confrontation to wipe them out for good.

In the end, they get their wish.

With the Cullens, the Denali Clan and the Quileute Tribe on one side and the Volturi on the other, the final battle is on. Carlisle, Jasper, Leah and many of the Volturi, including their leader, Aro, are killed.

Aro's is the final death we see, however, as we are then sucked back out of Alice's vision.

That's right, this epic fight never even happened. Instead, Aro scampers off with his tail between his legs and they all live happily ever after.

The textbook definition of anticlimactic.
