During a strange thunderstorm, Brooklyn resident Ray Ferrier quickly gains some first-hand experience with the extra-terrestrial monsters - nicknamed "tripods" for their three legs - after they crash land on Earth masquerading as lightning strikes.

Using powerful energy beams they can evaporate human tissue into a cloud of dust particles instantly. Ray's primary concern is to get his children, Rachel and Robbie, to safety outside of the city.

The family quickly realise that it is not just Brooklyn or even just New York that has been attacked, but rather it is a full global-scale attack.

The tripods instantly had the upper hand over humanity. Their weapons were deadly enough, but they also had forcefields that blocked anything fired their way. For the vast majority of the film, we only saw a single one killed; Ray manages to plant a grenade cluster directly inside the creature, blowing it up internally.

So how did humanity overcome this invasion, you might be asking?

Germs. Not even kidding.

A closing narration explains that the aliens could not handle the billions of microbes present on Earth and it effectively destroyed their immune systems. This is basically just a ramped-up Signs.

Shout out to Rachel's incessant screaming though, it reminded all of us that there are worse things in life than being vaporised by aliens.
