Most superhero films have the name of their main character somewhere in the title. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has only strayed from this once.

Avengers: Infinity War, the third Avengers film, is Thanos' story. As the superheroes are divided between Earth and space, Thanos is the only character to interact with every single one of them. He also has the most screen time and drives the plot, so he fits pretty much every definition of "main character."

In contrast, only three "Avengers" actually appear in this Avengers movie. After the events of Captain America: Civil War, the team has mostly disbanded, with only Iron Man, War Machine, and Vision still active members. In between the two films, Vision leaves the team to be with his girlfriend, the Scarlet Witch. Though Iron Man adds Spider-Man to the roster, none of the three Avengers are anywhere near as important to the plot as Thanos.

It's unclear if Thanos: Infinity War would have made two billion dollars, but it would have more accurately represented the movie.
