10 Movies You Constantly Have To Defend Hating
8. Under The Skin
2013's Under The Skin, beloved by critics and beard-stroking film fans the world over, is a beautifully directed, phenomenally atmospheric, visually stunning piece of sh*t movie that completely wastes its audience's time.
What's most galling about the film is that its premise is immediately intriguing and shows a great deal of promise. Scarlett Johansson plays an unnamed alien who impersonates a human woman and trawls the streets of Glasgow, picking up various men and trapping them in a black, oily void for an unknown and inscrutable purpose. The first few scenes, from the woman assuming her identity to her first seduction/abduction/whatever's going on, are indeed very engaging.
Sadly, Under The Skin then begins to outstay its welcome by effectively repeating this process a further three times with very little variation. It begins to feel much like an idea for a short film that has been padded out to justify a feature-length run-time.
Even more infuriating is the fact that the film then appears to get back on track, with the woman going rogue and abandoning her mysterious mission, discovering some humanity amongst those she has been instructed to abduct... only to end up being raped, chased through a forest and burned to death. It renders any previous character development meaningless, and while that's not always a bad thing, for a film that was already having to claw back some good will, you can't help resenting what you just sat through.
