10 Movies You Didn't Know Recycled Footage From Other Films
1. Raiders Of The Lost Ark Used Stock Footage From Lost Horizon
The concept of a franchise as big as Indiana Jones having to cut corners to save money is laughable today, but before the first instalment came out, these were the problems Steven Spielberg was forced to navigate.
Spielberg was able to save a dollar here and there by renting stock footage to serve as Raiders of the Lost Ark's iconic map transitions. That imagery of a DC-3 flying over the Himalayas was originally created for the 1973 film Lost Horizon.
This wasn't the only time the movie's creative team was forced to make do with stock footage. Shots from 1975's The Hindenburg were used to double as a 1930s street. Well, it's cheaper than building one.
Due to the success of Raiders, the next film in the series, The Temple of Doom, enjoyed a budget of $10 million more than its predecessor and that's risen with every instalment. In other words, Indy 5 is unlikely to feature any stock footage.
