10 Movies You Didn’t Know Were Responsible For Game-Changing Innovations
5. The First Animated Film - Snow White And The Seven Dwarves
Heigh-ho-heigh-ho, it's the first full length animated film you know?
1937's Snow White and the Seven Dwarves is indeed the first feature length animated film showed, and proved that despite a lack of actual people, a cartoon could hold its own as a legitimate piece of cinema. It was insanely successful too and gave Disney reason and credence to produce further animated pictures (Bambi and Pinocchio would be the next two) and would continue the trend of Disney's 'princess in peril' films for the next 80 years.
During production it was referred to among staff as 'Disney's Folly' because it was thought to be too ambitious, which makes sense as it took almost four years and and an estimated $2m to produce, but the gambit paid off as the film has made nearly 20 times that today.
The Academy Awards presented the film with an honorary Oscar for its innovation and significance within cinema. Never mind that by today's standards of Disney film it's pretty unexciting, and Snow White may be the dumbest Disney character to date (don't eat apples from an obvious witch).
