The Time Bandits
HandMade Films

Terry Gilliam’s first film outside of Monty Python was the beloved 1980s fantasy film about a boy who goes on a time-hopping adventure with six dwarves he discovers living in his closet. The film was a rollicking good time with cameos from the likes of Ian Holm, John Cleese, and Sean Connery. Gilliam has been protective of the property for many years, but it seems like Apple+ now may be the studio to bring the fantasy tale back to life.

Gilliam is expected to executive-produce and have a hands-off role as more of a consultant for whoever takes over the reigns. Last summer it was announced that Apple landed Thor: Ragnarok and Jojo Rabbit director Taika Waititi to write and direct the pilot, but not much else has been said about the project since then.

Although Apple bought the rights to the property back in 2018, the project is still on the runway. Gilliam has a history of rocky film productions, so we wouldn’t expect this project to come without its own turmoil. If the project does get into the air, just think of how much fun Waititi could have with this property, not to mention all the celebrities he would have lined up to make guest appearances as historical figures!
