10 Movies You Had No Idea Joss Whedon Worked On
5. Waterworld
In what Joss Whedon describes as "seven weeks of hell", he worked on the set of 1995's Waterworld trying to inject some life into a very generic script. Having only meant to be working on the script for one week, Whedon faced a lot of difficulty working with a project which the last 40 pages of its screenplay didn't take place near water, and being unable to touch large chunks of the script that were penned by producer and star, Kevin Costner.
Speaking to The AV Club, Whedon says of the experience "I accomplished nothing. I wrote a few puns, and a few scenes that I can't even sit through because they came out so bad."
In the same interview, Whedon even hints sugests that his bad experiences on this film is what caused him to move back to working on television, including the fan-favourite Firely, "I mean, people ask me, 'What's the worst job you ever had?' 'I once was a writer in Hollywood…' Talk about taking the glow off of movies."
Unsurprisingly, Whedon's work on this film didn't do much to help what was ultimately a bit of a financial flop.
