10 Movies You Had No Idea They Remade
3. Sharktopus
Here's a film just about nobody ever expected to be remade - Syfy's shamelessly trashy, low-budget, Roger Corman-produced creature feature Sharktopus, which sees a shark-octopus hybrid terrorise Mexico, because why the hell not?
It proved successful enough for two direct sequels to be produced, Sharktopus vs. Pteracuda and Sharktopus vs. Whalewolf, and that seemed to be the end of the matter. But last year, some 13 years after Sharktopus' release, it was inexplicably given a big-budget Chinese remake, with the reveal trailer touting a shockingly high level of production value, particularly in regards to the visual effects and camerawork, while clearly taking visual cues from the recent Jason Statham-starring Meg movies.
Early social media reviews of the remake are relatively mixed, though there's a general air of astonishment at how lavish it looks, at least compared to the original, which was clearly made for a pittance. Some might argue, however, that the remake's impressive effects work isn't really in the scrappy spirit of the original and somewhat misses the point.
