3. 30 Days Of Night
The bizarre thing about 30 Days of Night is that it started out as an unsuccessful film pitch from writer Steve Niles before evolving into a highly successful comic book miniseries in 2002 and then finally coming full-circle in 2007 with the release of the film starring Josh Hartnett. With the films initial draft being scripted by Niles, it goes without say that the film is a very close adaptation - with the characters and relationships further fleshed out and only slight amendments made to accommodate a more seamless story. With the ominous and claustrophobic setting, 30 Days of Night stands out as one of the few vampire films in recent memory to be
actually scary, with a large amount of gore and a thoroughly creepy depiction of vampires adding to the dread. I think 30 Days of Night stands out as one of the few adaptations that betters its original, as by its very nature the film conveys the horror of the situation much more effectively then the literature it's based on.
