10 Movies You Hate For The Wrong Reasons
5. Man Of Steel
Why You Hate It: Because Superman snapped Zod's (Michael Shannon) neck and that's absolutely, positively something he would never, ever do. Even if he was backed into a corner and had no other choice, he'd find another way, right?
Honestly, the hand-wringing over Superman committing murder has always been pretty overblown: he had to choose between Zod and numerous innocent humans, so there really wasn't a choice to be made here.
Zack Snyder may have got many things wrong about Superman, but having him kill one of his own kind was a visceral, character-building moment, and categorically proved how silly rigid no-kill policies would be in reality.
Why You Should Hate It: Even if you hated Supes killing Zod, at least it was interesting and trying to do something different with the character.
For the most part, though, Man of Steel is a pretty dour, miserable affair, colour-graded into lifeless oblivion where the Man of Steel's bright, optimistic zeal is nowhere to be found either stylistically or narratively.
It's easy to luxuriate on fanboy-baiting details like Superman killing someone for utilitarian reasons, but what you really should be mad about is how Snyder stripped all the joy away from Superman in the stead of giving him his own Dark Knight-style opus he really didn't need.
