10 Movies You May Not Realise Are Based On The Work Of Shakespeare

5. New York + Romeo And Juliet = West Side Story

Shakespeare Shes The Man
West Side Story

As with both Warm Bodies and Romeo Must Die, West Side Story adapts Romeo and Juliet, updating the tragedy for modern audiences. Unlike the other movies, West Side Story doesn’t steer too far from the source, and is considered a classic in its own right.

Set in New York City, the film features a love story between two members of feuding street gang, adding musical scores to the grit of the original story. There's also fine performances from the films stars, including Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer.

With a number of issues that still resinate in this day and age, West Side Story is still as relatable as it was in the 1950s. It became an instant success upon release, and is often considered one of the most influential musicals of all time.
