2. Punch Drunk Love
Following his bloated but brilliant-for-their-bloatedness Boogie Nights and Magnolia, writer director Paul Thomas Anderson decided to condense down and make a film about just one character in 90 minutes. Theres a reason Punch-Drunk Love appears on underrated Adam Sandler performances list because its on a different plane of existence to his comfort zone. Sandler plays Barry Egan, a man crippled by his anger problems and insecurity, finally meets the woman of his dreams, played by Emily Watson. However, trouble arises when scam artists of a sex hotline wrestle him down for money, all while Barry has a scam of his own, taking advantage of a free flyer mile offer on packets of pudding. Its a very unconventional romantic comedy. One deliberately subversive to how you would expect in its fluid writing and stark visuals. The first time you watch it you expect something more obvious and easy, but Punch Drunk Love makes you work for it. While it is quite slight if abrasive, on revisits it feels full to the brim with life. It is a beautiful film, with gorgeous cinematography and a thriving score with beats and harmonics seemingly all over the place. Its truly one of Adam Sandlers greatest pieces of work and a deliciously ferocious performance from Philip Seymour Hoffman sprinkled in for good measure.
