10 Movies You Won’t Believe Are In Development

6. The Prom

Nic Cage The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent
Netflix

What is shocking about this first entry is the lack of hype surrounding it. This musical comedy film is based on a hit musical, directed by the creator of Glee and starring the G.O.A.T Meryl Streep. How is nobody talking about this?

Ryan Murphy’s film is based on the hit musical of the same name and will be released in late 2020. The film stars Meryl Streep and James Corden as Tony Award winning actors, who receive disastrous reviews for their performances in an Eleanor Roosevelt based musical and attempt to revive their careers by travelling to Edgewater, Indiana to help two lesbian teenagers who aren’t allowed to go to prom as a couple. They are joined in their endeavour by veteran chorus girl Angie and down on his luck actor Trent (Nicole Kidman and Andrew Rannells).

Heart-warming and upbeat, the film could be Netflix’s first musical smash-hit and reunites Corden and Streep for the first time since Into the Woods. However, as Corden’s recent appearance at the Oscar’s showed, not all stage to screen adaptations work. Murphy will want to avoid the pitfalls of Cats, which should be easy given that The Prom is vastly more suitable for a film adaptation.

With a stellar cast and a director with decent pedigree, The Prom is poised for great things. Everyone will want a date with Netflix’s prom.
