The world of cinema changed with the release of Iron Man in 2008, a film that saw the launch of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and entered the world into the age of the big screen superhero.

That's not to say that comic book adaptations didn't happen previously however, as three years prior saw the release of Sin City. Boasting a stacked cast including the likes of Bruce Willis, Elijah Wood, Mickey Rourke, Clive Owen, Jessica Alba, and more, the movie took on an anthology of stories based in the titular city that very occasionally and briefly crossed with each other.

Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller directed the picture based on the latter's comic book, and went out of their way to make it feel as much like the source material as possible. The aesthetic was unbelievably unique, and from beginning to end felt like the pages come to life, from the characters to the action, to the sparks of colour on the otherwise black and white palette.

Outside of the sequel that in no way lived up to the original, there has been nothing like Sin City since, with no comic book movie actually looking quite so much like a comic book.
