10 Movies You Won't Believe Cost So Much Money

9. The Room - $6 Million

Evan Almighty Budget
Wiseau Films

After watching The Room, one of the most famously bad movies ever made, any reasonable person would guess that the budget was maybe about $100,000. It looks absolutely terrible, most of the film just takes place in a few rooms, and even many of the outdoor sequences are just shot on a green screen. So it must have been pretty cheap, right?

Nope, it cost $6 million, and once you start following the behind the scenes of the film, it becomes clear how the budget got that out of control. For one, director Tommy Wiseau gave just about every main cast member an understudy for some reason, meaning for large sections of the production he was paying two actors for one part.

There were also a number of baffling decisions made throughout production, like how Wiseau had sets built for scenes that clearly could have been shot in a real place. Oh, and because Wiseau wasn't sure if he should shoot The Room on video or film, he just used two cameras the entire time.

All in all, the movie employed about 400 people despite looking like it was made by a crew of 10 guys during a long weekend.
