10 Movies You Won't Believe Cost So Much Money
7. R.I.P.D. - $130 Million
R.I.P.D. is a passable Men in Black style flick about two recently deceased cops and the "Rest In Peace Department." It's not horrible, but you get the impression that because the focus was on comedy, the studio didn't want to spend that much money polishing up the special effects.
Once again that's not the case, and this Universal bomb somehow cost $130 million. That's pretty baffling considering that while the movie does have a decent amount of CGI, it all looks pretty horrible and like something out of a 2003 movie rather than a 2013 one.
Deadline reported at the time that the actual budget was more like $150 million, which puts it pretty close to something like Guardians of the Galaxy. When a film like that can look so amazing while R.I.P.D. looks like a video game, it definitely makes you wonder what the hell happened on this production. It didn't even come close to making its money back, grossing just $33 million domestically and $78 million worldwide. Ouch.
