10 Movies You Won't Believe Cost So Much Money
2. Foodfight! - $45 Million
Lawrence Kasanoff came up with the idea for this animated film set in a supermarket back in 1999, and he was able to raise $45 million to make it. Kasanoff decided he'd direct the movie himself despite having no directing or animation experience at all. What could go wrong?
Apparently working with Kasanoff was a nightmare, and he'd give notes like “make it more awesome” or “make it 30 percent better." Foodfight was supposed to come out in 2002, but the team couldn't meet that goal. It was continuously delayed year after year until finally, the studio gave up and invoked a clause in the contract that allowed the insurance company to intervene and complete the film.
So basically, the studio stepped in to try to make something out of what was there, and the movie finally came out in 2012 looking completely unfinished. The result is one of the worst looking animated movies ever that looks like it was thrown together in a few months and not the result of a 12 year process. What was meant to be the next big animated hit was unceremoniously released to DVD and promptly forgotten, with $45 million down the drain.
