10 Movies You’ll Be Shocked To Hear Were Huge Box Office Hits

1. The King's Speech (2010) - $414.2m

Tom Hooper's Oscar-bothering drama landed Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and of course Best Actor, which saw Colin Firth rewarded for an incredible performance as King George VI. Perhaps even more impressive was the movie's box office performance, which saw The King's Speech earn the kind of money that most $100m studio blockbusters would kill for. The movie's biggest market outside of the United States was unsurprisingly the United Kingdom where it earned almost $75m, which was more than Transformers: Dark of the Moon and Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol combined. Worldwide, The King's Speech earned more than big-budget action-packed blockbusters Tron Legacy, Prince of Persia, Robin Hood, Salt, Knight & Day and The Expendables, proving that brainless genre flicks aren't the only movies capable of getting cinemagoers to part with their cash. While it came as a surprise to many that a $15m period drama managed to post such impressive box numbers, the inspiring narrative and critically-acclaimed acting performances unexpectedly turned the movie into an uplifting crowd-pleaser.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
