Arguably more than any other entertainer in history, Britney Spears was the quintessential pop star. She’s still performing, but with her Vegas residency and minimal album promotion, she’s settled well now into a ‘former legend’ style career.
With a fanbase as dedicated and sprawling as Britney’s, it’s sure to sustain her for as long as she needs it too.
There’s people here more talented her and with bigger legacies in the industry, but there’s few who attained her level of constant, paparazzi obsessing fame.
Certainly, none had a downward spiral quite so public. Her infamous shaven head and umbrella attack came at tragically low point for Spears, and in the years since mental health has formed more of the public conversation.
With hindsight, and thanks in part to her remarkably dedicated recovery, the incident is looked upon with much more sympathy. At the time though, Spears was a laughing stock, her career in tatters.
It’s easy to wave away her songs as manufactured and shallow, but few artists have released more recognisable hits.
Britney has mentioned wanting Natalie Portman to play her, but the time for that has surely passed. Young starlet Ashley Benson is a better choice these days.
