10 Musical Biopics Hollywood Needs To Make Next
5. Bob Marley
Who Could Star: Donald Glover
Despite having such a compelling impact on music and pop culture, the Jamaican reggae legend Bob Marley is yet to get a biopic. With the trend of bringing musicians’ stories to the silver screen on the rise, this fact may soon be rectified.
Marley was a major factor in the growth of Caribbean and Rastafarian culture around the world, and shaped reggae music across his hugely successful career.
During political turmoil, Marley tried to bridge the gap by playing a free concert with the message of bringing peace. Days before, he was shot by a would be assassin, but survived and went on to play the show anyway.
A biopic might finally put paid to the urban myth that radio DJ Danny Baker killed Bob Marley with a football injury. Marley instead died from skin cancer which did first appear in his injured toe, though he’d had the cancer itself for over a year.
Because of his Rastafarian beliefs, Marley defied doctors’ advice and refused to have his toe amputated. He continued to tour until his death.
Glover has both acting and musical talent, and has tackled similar issues to Marley already in Atlanta.
