10 Musical Biopics Hollywood Needs To Make Next
3. Prince
Who Could Star: Janelle Monae
Rocketman was atypical of musical biopics in many ways, in that it didn’t have the music as just a background track. Instead, the movie fully explored the fantastical songwriting of Elton John; it was a risk, but one which certainly paid off.
This kind of risky approach is exactly what would be needed to pull off Prince’s life story. The legendary musician is one of the few around who can make Elton look tame and dull by comparison.
Whatever was going on in Dexter Fletcher’s Rocketman needs to be cranked up to eleven for Prince.
His personal life offers a lot of subject matter too. Prince’s first child died at a week old, while his wife (fifteen years his junior) had a miscarriage when carrying his second.
He was also deeply religious, famously sued for the rights to his own name and founded a coding charity for kids.
Janelle Monae would be a risk, but given Prince’s feminine persona, soft spoken voice and flamboyant style, she fits the bill more than most.
Bruno Mars was rumoured to be lined up at one point, but despite being a decent soundalike, probably lacks the acting experience this role would take.
