Way back before The Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit movies, Peter Jackson directed and co-wrote the New Zealand comedy horror film, Braindead. Largely considered as one of the goriest film of all time, this is another entry that was a commercial failure when it was originally released. However, in the following years it gained a cult following and was a pretty well known film even before Jackson found fame with his later movies. The film is brilliantly ridiculous from start to finish, with a minor zombie outbreak resulting from the bite of a Sumatran rat-monkey (a hybrid created when local monkeys were raped by plague-infected rats). Lionel Cosgrove's mother is the first victim and rather than put her out of her misery, Lionel tries to contain her in the family home's basement. This does not go well when, after sedating her for her funeral, she escapes and infects the townspeople. This is a must-watch for movie enthusiasts, even if only to see Peter Jackson's humble beginnings. Highlights of the film include a zombie baby on the rampage and a scene involving a large group of zombies and a petrol powered lawnmower.
