8. Colossal

As far as sci-fi fantasy's go, Colossal is certainly on the more grounded side of the scale.

Even though one way to sum up the premise would be "a man and a woman discover they can summon a giant robot and a monster when they stand in a sandpit". Perhaps it's because the film isn't shrouded in CGI spectacle, that it should already deserve a look at by non-fantasy fans.

If you're the type of person who doesn't like fantasy films, there is a strong possibility that you haven't seen Colossal. But I implore you to give this film a watch because while one giant premise of the film is absurd, it is also original and the plot of the film takes a completely different turn after the film's midpoint.

The quirky charm of this indie darling flick breaks apart and rebuilds itself into a very dark narrative that might seem familiar to a lot of movie audiences. Anne Hathaway blasts through the film as a continuous screw-up trying not to screw up her life, and Jason Sudeikis puts on a very unique performance as a new type of antagonist to see in film.

Colossal is a very small-scale movie that I guarantee will have you thinking about for a long time afterward.

I overthink a lot of things. Will talk about pretty much anything for a great length of time. I'm obsessed with General Slocum from the 2002 Spider-Man film. I have questions that were never answered in that entire trilogy!
