10 Netflix Original Movies That Are Better Than You Remember
6. Cargo
Based on an Australian short film of the same name, Cargo follows Martin Freeman as he tries to find a safe haven for his one-year-old daughter after he's been bitten during a zombie apocalypse. Already, that's a plot summary that tugs on the heart strings.
All his character wants to do is find someone to look after his daughter when he's gone, that's his story arc. And although it's set in the post-apocalyptic world, it doesn't have the gritty spectacle of broken cities or sprawling hordes of zombies. But instead, it keeps the threat localised and small - even manageable at times.
It does have a few tear-jerker moments, but it's also a thriller. Although it has a good four-star rating on Rotten Tomatoes, some critics like Josh Wise from Slant Magazine complained at the idea that the zombies were relegated to the landscape of the world rather than an active threat. But we feel that isn't the point of Cargo whatsoever, the zombie outbreak is just the narrative framing device.
The real bulk of the story is Andy (Martin Freeman) trying to provide a better future for his daughter. It's a horror thriller with genuine heart, and Martin Freeman delivers an excellent performance.
